Musical Mondays- We're Going to be Friends

Thanks so much to my good friend and fellow blogger, Amy Moellering for reminding me about this song.  Her awesome offerings can be enjoyed on:

Now, I meant to do this blog, oh, say two weeks ago, when school started.  However, I am an imperfect being, drowning in the mundane details of the day-to-day and, sometimes, just plain lazy.  Clearly, the better late than never rule needs to go into effect here.
This begins week three of the kids return to school.  Once the initial euphoria of the little rugrats returning to their daily routine had faded and I faced the towering “to do” list looming before me, I began to feel a tad nostalgic for the lost days of summer.  We had a lot of fun…
We went on picnics and fed the ducks…

Everyone likes feeding the duckies…

We slept in, we went to Jamba Juice, and we spent time by the pool.  The girls broke out that paragon of technology… the incredible Easy Bake Oven.
The miracle of baking with a light bulb… classic.

We did a lot of hikes, both here and up in the Sierras…
Selkie’s thinking, “Best Dog Day Ever!”

We went roller skating, bowled, and went to the zoo…
The Oakland Zoo

We even played tourist, taking the ferry across the bay to Fisherman’s Wharf…
As unlikely as it may seem, a gorgeous summer day in SF.

David turned thirteen, everyone got quality grandparents’ time, we went to Lake Almanor, saw fireworks, Eric and I went to Vegas for my birthday, and to Santa Rosa for my 25th high school reunion.  It was a packed, busy, happy time.
Sigh… I love summer.
Now it’s time to look forward towards routine, homework, new friends and new adventures.  The lyrics of the song on right on target.  For now, my children’s lives are still relatively simple.  They head back to school and hope they’ll fit in, find new friends, thrive.
Things will get complicated soon enough.
“It’s time to learn.”

Here are the lyrics to We’re Going to be Friends… Enjoy!

Fall is here, hear the yell
back to school, ring the bell
brand new shoes, walking blues
climb the fence, books and pens
I can tell that we’re going to be friends

Walk with me, Suzy Lee
through the park and by the tree
we will rest upon the ground
and look at all the bugs we found
safely walk to school without a sound
safely walk to school without a sound

Here we are, no one else
we walked to school all by ourselves
there’s dirt on our uniforms
from chasing all the ants and worms
we clean up and now its time to learn
we clean up and now its time to learn

Numbers, letters, learn to spell
nouns, and books, and show and tell
at playtime we will throw the ball
back to class, through the hall
teacher marks our height against the wall
teacher marks our height against the wall

We don’t notice any time pass
we don’t notice anything
we sit side by side in every class
teacher thinks that I sound funny
but she likes the way you sing

Tonight I’ll dream while in my bed
when silly thoughts go through my head
about the bugs and alphabet
and when I wake tommorow I’ll bet
that you and I will walk together again
I can tell that we’re going to be friends
